The Stories:

Most people who live in the western region of Nigeria and the former Federal Capital, Lagos are Yoruba.
The Yoruba have a long history, when and where the story begins, no one quite knows. In the old days, people could not write; so they left behind no written stories for us to read today. How then can we know about the distant past? The best we can do is listen to the stories which
people have handed down from generation to generation.
These stories, of legends as we call them, are still told today by parents to their children.
They are still all true in every detail. In fact, there are often several different versions of the same story. But, if we take them all together, we can learn what really happened in the earliest days of the Yoruba.
The Yoruba are divided into several tribes which include the Oyo, Ijebu, Ekiti, Egba, Ijesha, Ondo, Akoko and Ife.


The Yoruba, claiming a common descent from Oduduwa, have a fairly homogeneous culture.
The cultural homogeneity is reinforced by a powerful religious belief system which make Ife the
spiritual centre as important as Oyo which was once a political centre of a large part of Yoruba
land.

La maggior parte delle persone che vive nella regione occidentale della Nigeria e nell'ex-capitale
federale, Lagos, sono Yoruba.
Essi hanno una lunga storia, ma nessuno può dire quando e dove questa cominciò.
Nell’antichità, la gente non sapeva scrivere, è per questo motivo che gli Yoruba non ci hanno lasciato
storie scritte da leggere.
Allora, com’è possibile conoscere il passato lontano? La miglior cosa che possiamo fare è ascoltare i racconti che sono stati tramandato oralmente di generazione in generazione. Essi sono ancora tutti veri in ogni dettaglio, anche se in realtà, spesso, troviamo diverse versioni della stessa storia.
Tuttavia, se le prendiamo tutte insieme, possiamo imparare cosa sia realmente accaduto alle origini della
nascita della cultura Yoruba.
Gli Yoruba sono divisi in varie tribù, che includono la Oyo, Ijebu, Ekiti, Egba, Ijesha, Ondo, Akoko e Ife. Sostenendo una discendenza comune da Oduduwa, gli Yoruba possiedono una cultura abbastanza omogenea.
L'omogeneità culturale è rinforzata da un potente sistema di credenze religiose che fa di Ife un centro spirituale importante quanto Oyo, che una volta era il centro politico di gran parte della terra degli Yoruba.
